vintage theory books that never get old

When it comes to music books, my wife is no minimalist. We can pull out any number of theory books. So I've had a few to choose from,  but these have helped me the most . . .

  • For an introduction to theory, purchase the Bastien Intermediate Theory books 1,2, and 3, on Amazon from $2.00 used to $5.95 new/a piece.
  • Basic Materials in Music Theory,  A Programmed Course by Paul O. Harder is a basic review workbook for $12.00 used on Amazon.
  • For more theory, purchase a self-paced instructional workbook called Harmonic Materials in Tonal Music by either Greg A Steinke or Paul Harder.  There are two volumes- I adopted Volume I from my wife's collection of college texts. You can pick it up used for $5 to 15 bucks from Amazon.
I’m not a cheapskate. I keep telling myself that. But when my vocabulary consists of ‘how much’ all the time, it makes me wonder. Here are some sites where you don’t have to ask ‘how much’.

  • Go to pianowithwillie.com for 30 days of free piano lessons from beginning through advanced.
  • Go to pianogroove.com.  Under Lessons there are 7 free beginner courses on 'Jazz Piano Foundations', 8 lessons on 'Extended Chords and Voicings', and a few on 'Mastering Left Hand Voicing', as well as some resource downloads.
  • Go to greghowlett.com.  He has a free 'How to Chart a Song' video under courses, free lessons and arrangements, and access to excellent archives.
  • Go to artofcomposing.com. There is a free beginner composing course that begins with a Basic Idea and Development Worksheet.  and an Analysis of the Score
